German automaker Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, is conducting an internal investigation into its emissions certification processes.

The investigation was requested by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Daimler says that it is cooperating fully with the authorities. “Daimler will consequently investigate possible indications of irregularities and of course take all necessary actions,” said the company in a statement.

In April, a group of owners filed a class action lawsuit alleging that Mercedes’ BlueTEC diesel engines produce more nitrogen oxide than allowed. “The fact that Mercedes passed the dynamometer test in all tests, but failed the real world test, is suggestive that like VW, Mercedes is implementing a ‘defeat device’,” said U.S. law firm Hagens Berman.

Daimler denied the accusations with a statement, saying “we consider this class action lawsuit to be unfounded. Our position remains unchanged: A component that inadmissibly reduces emissions is not used in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”
